The Vatican City, officially known as the State of the Vatican City, is an independent city-state enclaved within Rome, Italy. It is the smallest sovereign state in the world, with an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres) and a population of around 800 people.

The history of the Vatican City can be traced back to the early days of Christianity, when St. Peter was crucified and buried on the Vatican Hill in 64 AD. The first basilica was built over his tomb in the 4th century, and over the centuries, the Vatican grew to become the center of the Catholic Church and the home of the popes.

In 1929, the Vatican City was established as an independent state under the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) and Italy. This treaty settled a long-standing dispute between the Italian government and the papacy over the status of the Vatican, which had been a part of the Papal States until their annexation by Italy in 1870.

Since then, the Vatican City has been ruled by the Pope, who is both the spiritual leader of the Catholic Church and the head of state of the Vatican City. The Vatican has its own government, banking system, postal service, and even its own army, the Swiss Guard.

Today, the Vatican City is a major tourist destination, known for its art, architecture, and history.
