The Crew Dragon capsule is a reusable spacecraft developed and produced by SpaceX as part of the Commercial Crew Program (CCDev). It is the variant of the Dragon 2 for the transport of a human crew.

The spacecraft was presented on May 29, 2014, during a press conference at the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.[2][3][4] It differs substantially from the previous model, the cargo version, operational from 2010 to 2020. The Dragon 2 has in fact an emergency life support system (ECLSS) capable of sustaining the crew for the duration of the flight; it is equipped with portholes, improved avionics, redesigned solar panels and a modified external structure.[5] It also features an integrated Launch Escape System (LES) capable of escaping the vehicle away from the rocket in an emergency with an acceleration of 11.8 m/s² (39 ft/s²), achieved using eight side-mounted SuperDraco engines, grouped in redundant pairs in four engine pods, with each engine producing 71 kN (16,000 lbf) of thrust, to rescue the crew in emergency situations that force the abandonment of the mission. The advantages of this configuration, instead of the conventional rescue tower are the reusability of the system, the possibility of using it until reaching orbit, the increase in safety resulting from the elimination of a separation event.[6]

On 6 May 2015, the first pad abort test was completed,[7] while another test of the engines took place on 24 November 2015.[8]

The first uncrewed test flight was carried out from pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on 2 March 2019[9], while the first crewed test, initially scheduled for 27 May 2020 but postponed to 30 May 2020 due to unfavorable weather conditions, was successful and docked with the ISS after about 19 hours[10][11][12] and then returned to Earth on 2 August 2020, with equal success, with a splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.

Recommended settings for printing
